saratoga rb top

Maybe this is the most ambitious project I ever made for my X1/9, thru the internet I knew about this roof, on the xwebforum I heard more about it and i tried to find one.

SARATOGA TOP was a solar top made on polycarbonate and appear as an aftermarket accesory on the 70's, the company dissapear from the market and today is extremely hard to find one. Last time on ebay one was sold for over 1,700 usd, I made my bid but somebody won the auction, I was short for just a couple hundreds.

Built this Top was a real challenge, each mistake cost money and time, each piece of lexan cost around 160.00 plus the time to cut, if you brake you need to start again, if you burn the lexan you need to start again, after many hours and mistakes I finish the first one on july 2007

But this one has many details and I decide to make a new lexan, the next one I overheated and burned all the lexan. well...I got a new sheet of lexan and start again.

After all I gain experience and I thought to make an other one. Today I have two SARATOGA RB TOPS, one on my X1/9 and other carefully on storage.

(update Jan 2014)

Over the years I made 3 different type of SARATOGA RB TOPS

1st and 2nd gen. I didn't know if after to use on freeways, the lexan won't brake or
have an accident so I decided to attach the lexan to the frame with screws.

Over the years I tested the roofs, take notes and make several test of resistance an all pass without any problem.

I made the last version of my "RB Saratoga Top 3G" (3rd generation) all glued.

Till today I have no worries and it looks really cool!.
